End-of-life vehicles
Collecting, storing, treating and disposing of end-of-life vehicles can pollute the environment. Each year in the UK, around 2 million vehicles become waste.
The end-of-life vehicle legislation aims to:
- influence the design of vehicles so that they, and their components, are easier to recycle
- reduce the use of certain hazardous materials in car and van manufacturing, making it easier and safer to dispose of the materials in end-of-life vehicles
- standardise treatment requirements and ensure that treatment facilities hold a permit and have equipment to prevent pollution
- increase the proportion of each vehicle that is recycled and reduce the quantity going to landfill.
This guidance outlines the main requirements of the end-of-life vehicle legislation. You should follow it if you manufacture vehicles, dispose of vehicles after owning them or accept waste motor vehicles onto your site.
