The earth’s climate is already changing. As well as reducing your business’ impacts on the climate, you will need to adapt to and minimise the effects climate change will have on your business.
Adapting to the impacts of climate change
Flooding
The Environment Agency and SEPA have produced flood maps to help you find out if your business premises are at risk of flooding in England, Scotland and Wales.
Floods are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change. The Environment Agency has produced guidance on how businesses can prepare for flooding. This guidance is relevant for businesses across the UK.
The Rivers Agency provides guidance on flood emergencies in Northern Ireland.
SEPA provides guidance on how to be prepared for the case of flooding.
Temperature changes
One of the impacts of climate change in the UK is expected to be higher summer temperatures. Increased average temperatures are already affecting agricultural and horticultural businesses, as growing seasons are extended.
High temperatures and heat waves can affect employees’ performance. Consider how you will keep your workplace cool in summer months. If you work outside you may want to change your hours of work to avoid the heat of the day.
Water shortages
Rainfall patterns continue to change in the UK. If your business activities use water, you should have plans in place for what to do in the event of water restrictions.
For example, you could install a grey water recycling system for your business premises, or take measures to ensure that your processes are as water efficient as possible.
