Control of major accident hazards (COMAH)

The Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) Regulations aim to ensure that businesses:

  • Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH)take all necessary measures to prevent major accidents involving dangerous substances
  • limit the consequences to people and the environment of any major accidents which do occur.

The COMAH Regulations apply mainly to the chemical and petrochemical industries, fuel storage and distribution.

They may also affect businesses that:

  • store fuels, including gas
  • have large warehouses or distribution facilities
  • manufacture and store explosives
