Energy labelling: which products does it apply to?

If you manufacture or sell household electrical equipment you must label it with its energy efficiency rating. Household electrical products that you must label include:

  • refrigerators, frozen-food storage cabinets and food freezers
  • combined washer-driers
  • dishwashers
  • electric or fluorescent lamps produced since March 1988, if they have a luminous flux of less than 6,500 lumens or an input power of more than 4W
  • tumble driers produced after 1 April 1996
  • washing machines with integral spinning capability, which heat their own water, and were produced after 1 April 1996
  • household air conditioners with an output (cooling power) less than 12kW, except air-to-water and water-to-water appliances
  • household electric ovens, including ovens which are part of larger appliances.

You do not need to label certain ovens, including:

  • portable ovens weighing under 18kg, provided they are not designed for built-in installations
  • microwave ovens and microwave combination ovens
  • ovens with a cavity width and depth of less than 250mm, or that are less than 120mm high
  • ovens without adjustable temperature control.
